Ironically, the mailing lists fell prey to the same scourge of the 'Net that killed the alt.sex.fat usenet group -- Spam.
No, it didn't make it to the list, choke the server, or otherwise do anything to the list directly. However, it did create a world where people can extort you if they decide that YOU'RE spamming.
In this case, some jerkoff at AoHell decided that, rather than ask me to unsubscribe them from the list, they rode AOL to the point that they threatened to cut off my entire ISP. Never mind that a simple filter would have done the job. If you still use AOL, it's time to switch.
Fortunately, I was already making the switch -- Spam filters and crappy e-mail delivery was killing the list slowly.
Hell yes. It's even easier to read the blogs than it was to read the mailing list. Responding is another story -- between work, relationships, and the usual bizareness that my life brings, finding the time to write is sometimes a challenge.
Not really...definitely no personal ads or (gah) weight loss snake oil. There are some times when I'll permit something to be posted that is of relevance to the journal in question, but it must ALWAYS go by me or one of the other moderators first -- no exceptions.
